  ชาวเซ้ลต์(ชาวไอร์แลนด์ในปัจจุบัน)เชื่อว่าทุกวันที่ 31 ตุลาคม ของทุกปี จะเป็นวันที่ประตูนรกถูกเปิดขึ้น   ทำให้เหล่าวิญญาณพยายามหาทางเขาสิงมนุษย์
  The Celtics( i.e. Ireland as we know it today) believe that the October 31 of every   year is the day that the Hell Gate would be opened for all the spirits to come out and   search for living bodies to possess.

  There was a drunkard man named Jack (a blacksmith) who tricked the devil to save his   soul. After Jack had died, he was allowed into neither Heaven nor Hell.

  เจ้าปีศาจจึงได้ให้ถ่านอันคุกรุ่นแก่ Jack เพื่อให้เขาใช้นำทางในหนทางที่มืดมิด Jack   รับถ่านนั้นและได้ใส่ไว้ในหัวผักกาดเพื่อใช้เดินไปรอบ ๆ โลกเพื่อค้นหาที่สักที่หนึ่งเพื่อพักพิงวิญญาณของเขา
  The devil threw Jack a hot coal so he could see the way in the dark. Jack caught the hot   coal and put it into a turnip as he was wandering around the world trying to find the   place to rest his soul.

  When the festival came to America, turnips were difficult to find so they used pumpkins   instead.
